AI-assisted livestock monitoring

Sept 8, 2026

Researchers from the Department of Software Engineering at the University of Szeged have contributed to the development of an innovative artificial intelligence-based decision-support system designed to make dairy farming more efficient and sustainable.

Developed jointly by the University of Szeged and Milkmen Földesi Ltd., the Smart Farmer’s Eye (IntelliFarmMoo) prototype uses a multimodal sensing system built on the university’s machine-vision platform to monitor animals around the clock.

On-site AI algorithms process the collected data, enabling continuous identification and tracking of individual cattle while helping farmers detect potential health and welfare problems, including mastitis and hoof-related diseases, at an early stage. IntelliFarmMoo could help improve both productivity and competitiveness while supporting more informed, data-driven farming decisions.

The project has already resulted in a patent application for a system and method capable of predicting lameness and udder diseases in dairy cattle, marking another important step toward bringing AI-based precision livestock farming technologies into everyday agricultural practice.
