International Project to Secure Europe’s Digital Identity Wallets

May 11, 2026

Researchers at the University of Szeged are leading a new three-year international project to improve the security of digital identity systems.

The work is especially timely as the European Union plans to introduce digital identity wallets, known as EUDI wallets, across member states. These wallets could allow citizens to prove their identity online when using banking, public utilities, or government services.

The project will develop a cybersecurity framework and software tool to help decision-makers compare digital identity solutions and choose the safest options. According to project leader Dr. Rudolf Ferenc, weak security could allow attackers to act in someone else’s name, for example, by starting financial transactions or handling official matters fraudulently.

The researchers will use artificial intelligence to detect software vulnerabilities and suggest fixes. They will also examine post-quantum cryptography to prepare for future risks from quantum computers, and blockchain-based data management to reduce the danger of attacks on centralized systems. The project is coordinated by the University of Szeged in cooperation with the University of Trento in Italy and the University of Oslo in Norway, with support from the HU-RIZONT programme.
